Andrew Buchholz is the product marketing director at SmartBrief, a digital publishing company providing over 6 million professionals with super-relevant, industry-specific news and research. We’d be hard-pressed to find someone better suited than Andrew to take on the topic of email newsletters. Lucky for us, that’s just what he’ll be discussing with us at EiQ 2018.
During his EiQ presentation, “Reinventing Newsletters the Right Way,” he’ll be joined by experts from Rheem, AARP, and Cox Media Group to teach us a thing or two about what it means to send a newsletter in the 1:1 marketing era.
We recently asked him some EiQ- and email-related questions and you might be surprised to hear which brands and which business people he admires most.
What do you get excited about in the email world?
Lately, I’ve been excited about personalized emails. To maintain engagement, I think email will continue to move toward a tailored experience.
What part of an email is the most important to drive success and why?
Know your email’s target audience. Once you understand who they are, success will follow.
What advice do you have for newcomers to the email industry?
Study the limitations of email, and then challenge them.
Who is a brand that you think does a great job with their email program?
American Express. I love how they use personalized data to provide hyper-relevant and interactive emails.
What ideas are you excited about sharing at EiQ?
I’m excited to share what SmartBrief is doing to keep our 6 million subscriptions engaged.
What’s your favorite thing about Atlanta?
I’m a huge Chick-Fil-A fan, so going to The Dwarf House is a must.
From a career standpoint, how did you end up in email?
I was looking to move to DC and came across SmartBrief. After interviewing, I really liked the product and the culture, so I made the transition to email.

In the business world, I’ve always been inspired Mark Cuban. When I was a kid, I watched a documentary about him and was hooked from that point on. I mean, who doesn’t want to own their own tech company and sports team?!
